Years ago, I was studying to prepare a teaching on the Old Testament sacrifices, when I came across something that blew my mind! I was reading Lev. 1:3 in Spanish and there was the word holocausto (holocost). It is used many times in the Greek OT. in translating/describing the burnt sacrifices and offerings. In Spanish, as in English, it means all consuming fire. However, in the context of the scriptures It is used when talking about the burnt sacrifices made to God. These sacrifices were commanded by God to be made and there were many specifications how to-and not to perform them. God called these burnt offerings/holocostos "sweet smelling savor" (Gen. 8:21; Lev. 1:9,13,17; Lev. 3:16; Eph. 5:2). So, the original use of holocost deals with the all fire consumed sacrifice which became a sweet smelling savor to God. Sacrifices God was pleased with. Can we please stop calling what happened to the Jews in the 1940's a Holocost? It was not a pleasant sacrifice to God. It was not a sweet smelling savor. God was certainly not pleased with it. Call it vile, vulgar, an atrocity, genocide, disgusting, unthinkable, etc. The words are endless. Only don't call it a holocaust because God hated what happened to the Jews, but He blessed the Old Testament sarifices(holocosts).
