Gen. 6:2,4 the "sons of God"
Gen. 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Gen. 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare
children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Just who are these "sons of God"? Leaving opinion out of the equation, let's see what the Word does and does not say. There are those who say that in the Old Testament, every instance of "sons of God" are angels and in the New Testament "sons of God" only applies to men. We will leave these two verses in Genesis for a time and examine other Old Testament scriptures to see if this bares true.
Hos. 1:10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to
pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living
God.
Does the fact that the word "living" is inserted before God take away from the statement the these are "sons of God" and indeed men? Obviously not. In Job, there are 3 verses which use the phraseology "sons of God". Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7.
Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present
himself before the LORD.
Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
The first 2 verses describe the "sons of God" presenting themselves before the LORD. Are there other verses where someone(s) is/are presenting
themselves to the LORD? Let's see. (We will get to the last verse a little bit later)
1Sam. 10:19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto
him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
Here we have a verse where men are specifically called to present themselves before the LORD. There are also countless verses where men stand before the LORD, gather (assemble or congregate) before the LORD, dance before the LORD, walk before the LORD, etc. It stands to reason, if one is involved in actions like these, he/they is doing it before the LORD and thus presenting himself/themselves before the LORD. Here are a few verses
to show this.
Gen. 18:22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
Gen. 19:27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
Ex. 6:12 And Moses spake before the LORD, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear
me, who am of uncircumcised lips?
Ex. 23:17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.
Ex. 34:24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to
appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.
Ex. 34:34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the
children of Israel that which he was commanded.
Jdg, 20:26 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD,
and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
1Sam.1:19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah
knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
1Sam. 1:22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he
may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.
2Sam. 6:14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
1Chr. 17:16 And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought
me hitherto?
2Chr. 20:13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
Ps. 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
Ps. 116:9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.
Dan. 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before
the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
All these would entail presenting before the LORD. There are many more examples too numerous to mention. Enough has been placed here that you get the idea. Use a concordance or other Biblical search engines to get more verses.
Job 38:7 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
This verse is most probably is talking about some kind of heavenly beings. They are beings which were around when God was creating the heavens
and Earth. They could be angels, seraphim, cherubim, or some other being Read from verse 1 of this chapter to get the gist. Let us now look at some words of Jesus.
Mt. 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
Mk. 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
If the angels don't marry, they don't. So, the passages in Gen. 6:2,4 cannot be referring to angels whether fallen or not, because they don't marry
according to Jesus. He ought to know. Since they are not angels, they must be human men. We have no other record of women marrying anything except men and consequently having children by them.
Below are some New Testament scriptures showing that "sons of God" are definitely human beings.
Jn. 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Rom. 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Gal. 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Philip. 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom
ye shine as lights in the world;
1Jn. 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us
not, because it knew him not.
1Jn. 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like
him; for we shall see him as he is.
Proven in this is that there can be no blanket statement that "sons of God" refer only to angels; though there is one verse(Job 38:7) where this is
most likely. The "sons of God" in Gen. 6:2,4 can only be Godly men who married ungodly women(daughters of men, not daughters of God). These unequally yolked unions produced evil children.
Gen. 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare
