This is a study we did in the adult Sunday school class. As we are never on a time schedule(how can you put a time limit on studying/teaching God's word?), we spent over a year of classes going through this one book! At times, we stopped and expounding on other things and themes. For the most part though, we spent the time finding Jesus or types and examples of Him in Genesis. The class had a lot of fun reading at home to study in hopes of seeing Him in something that nobody else in class had seen or found. It almost became a learning competition! Everyone participated and the class grew! I will be adding to this from time to time.
Gen. 1:1 "In the beginning..."
Jesus called Himself the Alpha and Omega(the beginning and the end) 4 times, all of them in Revelation(1:8,11; 21:6; 22:13).
"God created..."
The Hebrew word translated God here and nearly 3000 other times is elohim(various spelling). Any time there is an im ending to a
Hebrew word it is plural. It is like adding an s to an English word. Consider the words cherubim and seraphim-more than one cherub and
seraph. This is not to say that more than one God was creating, but rather, God in His plurality: Father, Son, Holy Ghost. For scriptures
on Jesus as creator, see Col. 1:16,17; Heb. 1:2; 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 3:9.
As we have entered into a study on names of God, I've prepared a short list below. It is a list of some of the names, or titles that Jesus and God have in common. It is not an exhaustive list nor does it contain every scriptural reference of each name or title listed. It can be a good start for study though and should provide to be useful.

Here is a little something for those using the KJ version. In the OT, everytime GOD or LORD is in all caps, it is the word "Jehova" being translated.
If you have God {Cap "G" lower case o-d} it is the word "Elohim". If the word is Lord {Cap "L" lower case o-r-d it is the word "Adonai" This is true everytime throughout the OT. Gen. 1:3 "Let there be light..." PROPHECY OF JESUS COMING TO BE THE LIGHT
Is. 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Is. 42:6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; Is. 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Is. 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. |
JESUS
Rev. 1:8 Is. 9:6 Col. 1:16 Is. 9:6 Rev. 1:8 Ex. 3:2,6 Mt. 4:23; Lk. 9:11 Lk. 1:69 Jn. 8:58 Acts 17:31 Mt. 27:37 Jn. 14:6 Is. 40:3-Mt. 3:3 Is. 40:10,11; Zech. 14:5 1 Cor. 2:8; Jam. 2:1 Is. 9:6 1 Cor. 10:4 Phlp. 3:20; 2 Pet. 1:1,11 Jn. 10:16 Jn. 14:6 Heb. 1:3 Jn. 14:6 Is. 9:6 FULFILLED Mt. 4:16; Lk. 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Lk. 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Acts 13:47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. Eph. 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. |
Gen. 1:4 "...divided the light from the darkness."
Jesus not only is the light, but is the separator between light and dark.
Mt. 3:12 Jesus tells a parable between the usable wheat and non usable chaff. Both part of the same stalk, yet he will divide them. The wheat will be
gathered in His hand. The chaff will be burned in unquenchable fire.
Mt. 13:30 Another parable. In this one, weeds and wheat are growing along side each other. Jesus says He will gather the weeds and burn them.
The wheat, He will save in His barn.
Mt. 25:32,33 Jesus uses the analogy of comparing sheep and goats as dark and light. Good and evil. Saved and unsaved. He tells us that upon His
return, He will separate them.
Gen. 1:5 "And God called the light, Day..."
As discussed previously, this light is not from the sun. The sun was not created until day 4 Gen. 1:14-19. This is the light coming from the Godhead of which, Col. 2:9 says "For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. "
So, Jesus is the light. He is the separator of light and dark. And now the light has a name: Day.
Lk. 1:78
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
The Greek word for dayspring is anatole which means a rising of light, dawn, the beginning of a new day.
2 Pet. 1:19
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Day star is 2 words in English but only 1 word in Greek. Phosphoro-which means bearer of light or that which brings or carries lumination
Rev. 2:28
And I will give him the morning star.
The Greek word for morning here is proinos which means morning, dawn, daybreak
Rev. 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning
star.
The Greek word for bright in this verse is lampros(where we get "lamp" from) and means radiant, bright, bright, clear, white. The word for morning, orthrinos, is akin to anatole meaning rising of light.
