ABRAHAM'S ALTAR EGO
It would seem that at least from the time of Noah(Gen. 8:20) altars to the Lord were being built. From Gen. 22:9 and the following verses, it can be noted that animal sacrifices were a part of ceremony to worship the Lord. This was many hundreds of years before the law and its different sacrifices were officially instituted!

Gen. 13:18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
Of note is that the last altar he built was the one to sacrifice his son. We are told of no more built by him. It is also the only one he built after his name change. Gen. 17:5
